31 Days Until Close Up!

In four weeks we will head in to Manhattan to get on the bus that will take us to Washington D.C. for our week spent participating in the Close Up Program for New Americans. This is a description of the program from Close Up's website:

"Close Up’s Program for New Americans (PNA) is built on the belief that textbooks and lectures alone are not enough to help students understand responsible citizenship. The PNA program gives recently immigrated high school students the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to become informed and active citizens of the United States. Close Up’s PNA program is more than just a tour of the well-known memorials and monuments of our nation’s capital. It gives students a practical understanding of U.S. politics and culture by emphasizing communication, collaboration, and leadership. Our hands-on, interactive approach allows all students to get involved and have a voice in issues important to them."

So, when thinking about this, what issue is important to you? Write your answer in the comment section and explain why you chose this issue.

  2. For me as one of the new immigrants in the United States, in personally, I feel that the changes in education for immigrants are the most important issue that needs to ameliorate. CACF believe that “Require that schools with high Asian Pacific American student populations provide teachers, school social workers, and counselors with on-going professional development to addresses the social and cultural contexts that influence AAPI student learning and experience.”
Most of the Public schools in the New York City don’t have the services provided like in our school, The Flushing International High School. In few years ago, I remembered that under the situation have been studied in a place that has only ONE Chinese speaking staff in the entire school. I aware that school have offered much more special helps to other racial groups such as Latino and Blacks. Also, there were pretty much students who were came from China and most of us were the new immigrants to this country. Therefore, in facts, we don’t understand the lessons had been taught in the class. And as an English beginner, all the ESL students were been assigned to the same class. Yet not all the teachers can understand the hardship of leaning the English as a Second Language, and teachers would think that we’re fool enough to not understand what they were teaching. However, as if there have one well highly trained and educated Chinese speaking teacher, then I think it’ll be much easier for the rest of the Chinese student to accelerate their studies.
Therefore, I believe that in order to make a school and the new immigrant students to succeed, the school should have staffs that can speak different languages from different countries. And also, teacher should be patient in order to teach the new immigrants since it’s not easy to learn English as a second language.

  3. an issue important to me is IRAQ WAR..... I feel that instead of using all the millions and millions of dollars on a pointless war, the US should be focusing of the prosperity of the people in the country. This money should be used rather on Education, Jobs, etc....
